Lawmakers OK bill to restore voting for felons in Washington State

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Gov. Chris Gregoire has approved a measure that lets convicted felons get their voting rights back once they're no longer in state custody. Gregoire signed the bill into law Monday. It takes effect July 26.

Oregon looks at taxing mileage instead of gasoline

Oregon is among a growing number of states exploring ways to tax drivers based on the number of miles they drive instead of how much gas they use, even going so far as to install GPS monitoring devices in 300 vehicles. The idea first emerged nearly 10 years ago as Oregon lawmakers worried that fuel-efficient cars such as gas-electric hybrids could pose a threat to road upkeep, which is paid for largely with gasoline taxes.

Ore. woman, 88, gives naked intruder the 'squeeze'

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said an 88-year-old woman fended off a naked intruder by grabbing the man's crotch and squeezing. Deputy Paul McRedmond said the man got into the house Tuesday through a sliding door. He backed the woman into her living room and pushed her face down onto a chair.
